- "Cy-Bugs are like a virus. They don't know they're in a game. All they know is eat, kill, multiply! Without a beacon to stop them, they'll consume Sugar Rush!"
- —Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun
The Cy-Bugs are a race of robotic bug-like creatures and are the secondary antagonists in the Disney's 2012 CG animated film Wreck-It Ralph. They serve as the generic enemies in the shooting game Hero's Duty. Because of some of the failed programming of Hero's Duty, Cy-Bugs are unable to tell the difference between the game and real life, meaning they are truly malevolent creatures unlike other characters who are merely villains in their games only. Thus forces the heroes of Hero's Duty to constantly battle the bugs to prevent them from destroying the world of Litwak's Arcade.
As their name suggests, they are robotic bug-like beings with many insect-like qualities, for instance the ability to fly, pitchers, and crab legs. Their appearance changes depending on what they devour and assimilate.
Unlike other game characters in the arcade, Cy-bugs are mindless animals programmed to eat and multiply, (as Sergeant Calhoun exclaims that all they know is eat, kill, multiply) blissfully unaware that they are in a video-game. Because of this, they are highly aggressive and rely on swarming others alongside other Cy-bugs as a hunting strategy. They do not appear to be very bright, and act upon insect-like compusion (i.e. are attracted to bright lights).
Powers and AbilitiesEdit
Cy-Bugs mutate to mimic the material of whatever they eat, and as a result, there are infinite possibilities for the many subspecies of Cy-bug that could exist. For example, when one eats Ralph's laser-gun, the Cy-bug grew two arm-like mandibles that shot lasers just like his gun. Whether this effects them contectually or adds to their arsenal differ according to what they eat. Cy-bugs reproduce fairly quickly, growing to full-size in less than a few hours and laying hundreds of eggs in the meantime. Cy-bug eggs appear to be activated through touch. It is shown through King Candy that if a Cy-bug eats a sentient game character, that character override's the cy-bug's instincts and becomes that Cy-bug's controlling mind.
Their only weakness appears to be the laser beacon found in their home game, zapping them like one giant bug-zapper. All Cy-Bugs are powerless to avoid it, their eyes sparkling blue as they willingly go towards the beacon (or anything similar to it) to their deaths, whether or not they play host to a character.
Role in the CrossoverEdit
Much like wild dragons, Cy-bugs are seen as nothing but wild animals that antagonize civilized characters, or can be used as minions much like Marshmallow and Pitch's nightmares. Because of their outlandish concept, the Cy-bugs are often relegated within the arcade world Wreck-It Ralph is from or whatever sort of science-fiction based AU.
